Our family has never been really big on Halloween. I remember us going trick-or-treating maybe a couple of times, but the majority of the time we counted the Church's Trick-or-Trunk activity as our Halloween festivities. I remember us purposely turning off our porch light to deter would-be trick-or-treaters away. One time, we forgot and had a porch light on for Mom to come home, and some little Superman or something caught us. He knocked on the door and held his bag open, ready for somethin' good. I was sitting in the kitchen, wondering what Dad was going to do about this. He told the kid to hang on a minute and frantically started rummaging through the cabinets for something sweet to share with our surprise, not-so-welcome guest. After a while, he found our stash of candy canes we had collected probably over the past ten years and gave a couple to the patient little superhero. I think I remember him running back to the car, excitedly yelling to his mom that he got candy canes. I'm sure the Mom made a mental note to never visit this weird house again.
Halloween was just not that big of a deal to us. I never really thought this was out of the ordinary until I got married. Doug told me stories of rampaging the neighborhood with his brothers and coming home with whole pillowcases full of candy. Just visiting the in-laws house last night, we had a group of trick-or-treaters at least every couple of minutes. I was amazed. I actually really enjoyed answering the door and seeing all the different costumes and cute little kids. It got kind of annoying when the teenagers came later that night, but for the most part it was pretty fun.
Anyways, I guess the point of my rambling is, I like Halloween. I am excited for next year to see if we get any trick-or-treaters at our place.
